Merle coat pattern

- Identification of the effective and cryptic “Merle” variant.
Merle” is a colour variation that occurs due to a mutation in the PMEL17/SILV gene. A prerequisite is that an “E” gene is present at the E locus. The variation is variable in extent and only develops its typical effect above a certain threshold value. Shorter variants do not appear and are considered “cryptic merle”. Effective merle genes lead to varying intensities of merle markings depending on their extent. The extent can change from generation to generation, so even animals with cryptic merle should not be mated with other merle animals to avoid health problems.
