CDDY & IVDD

The test identifies the presence of the FGF4 retrogene insertion on chromosome 12. This mutation is one cause of shortened legs (CDDY, disproportional dwarfism) in dogs. It is also a risk factor for the occurrence of Hansen type 1 disc herniation (IVDD type 1). Leg length will differ depending on if the dog has one or two copies of the mutation as the mutation is incomplete dominant for this trait. For IVDD the mutation is dominant with incomplete penetrance, meaning that it confers a risk of developing the condition. The test is not meaningful in assessing IVDD risk in dachshunds.
