Chondrodysplasia (CDPA)is a genetic disorder characterized by the abnormal growth of bones, particularly the long bones, leading to the short-legged phenotype.
This condition is caused by an FGF4-retrogene insertion on chromosome 18 and is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.
CDPA is distinct from Chondrodystrophy (CDDY), which involves another FGF4-retrogene insertion on chromosome 12 and is associated with both short legs and an increased risk of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) - type 1.
Genetic testing identifies these mutations, aiding breeders in making informed decisions to manage and reduce the prevalence of these conditions in affected breeds.
